About
My name is Anne Glista and I am a photographer who lives in Chicago. I focus primarily on nature photography and photography that explores the intersection of human activity and the natural world.
In the summer of 2008 I started a year long one-photo-a-day photoblog, http://365pics.wordpress.com, stating my simple purpose of seeing beauty in everyday life. Over the course of the year I found myself particularly drawn to nature photography and a few themes emerged that continue to influence my work. I encourage you to view these by exploring my galleries.
In our current technological age, people can so easily see such a variety of amazing images from all over the world in mere clicks as pixels on screens.
I am one of these people. I type and click every day of my life, for more hours than I'd like to admit. I will spare you any detailed social commentary on the dangers vs the advantages of this lifestyle, as they have been explained by many before me. I only want to mention this briefly because I believe my interest in how the information and technological age is changing us most definitely affects my experience with photography, on numerous levels.
During the course of my http://365pics.wordpress.com project I found myself stepping outside more often with a certain heightened awareness of my surroundings. While walking trails in Nichols Arboretum and the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, while sinking my feet in sand at Lake Michigan, and even while strolling in my own neighborhood and yard, I noticed that in general being outside in nature made me feel good, and in comparison to sitting at a computer, well, I felt great. I felt surprised by what I saw: a symmetrical set of leaves, by a unique color combination, or a striking intersection of a human built object with a natural formation or growth. I enjoyed photographing what I saw.
Now, as time goes on, I occasionally find myself choosing to leave my camera at home. I have a new found appreciation for the freedom of peripheral vision, and beyond that I find that there are times when I value simply acting in, engaging with and observing the world, unobstructed. Photography remains a big part of my life, but I choose when and where.
In general, it is my hope that my photographs inspire people to go outdoors and to observe and engage in life. Observe whatever is around you: nature, city, people, sky. Do it now, don't wait. Step outside and take a look.
